School Readiness Program

The Preschool Room marks the final stage in preparing children and their families for the transition from childcare to school. Our School Readiness Program is designed to facilitate this transition, focusing on developing essential skills in literacy, numeracy, and self-help to ensure both short- and long-term success at school. This stage is crucial for building positive relationships and enhancing self-esteem, which supports a smooth transition to the school environment.

Integrating School Readiness:

Our School Readiness Program is seamlessly integrated into the existing curriculum. It leverages the children’s current skills and interests to foster a love for learning rather than imposing academic tasks. While academic tasks like worksheets are not necessary for all children, those interested can engage with them, but they should not be mandated for everyone. Our goal is to nurture confident learners and set a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Key Developmental Skills:

  • Cognitive Skills: Encourage curiosity, confidence in learning, and problem-solving willingness.

  • Language Skills: Support asking questions, expressing ideas, listening, and enjoying stories.

  • Social and Emotional Skills: Foster play participation, positive peer interactions, friendship building, emotional expression, conflict resolution, and understanding rules and transitions.

  • Self-Help Skills: Develop independence in using the toilet, dressing, managing personal items, and adapting to structured environments.

  • Physical Skills: Enhance abilities in running, jumping, balancing, and using various tools and equipment.

School Readiness Experiences:

Our program includes practical experiences to prepare children for school:

  • Lunch Box Days: Practice handling and eating from their lunch boxes.

  • Group Games: Encourage social skills and cooperation.

  • Independence: Promote self-help skills and positive discussions about school.

  • School Visits: Arrange visits and orientations to familiarize children with the school environment.

  • Art and Craft: Support the use of crayons, pencils, glue, and scissors.

  • Regular Reading: Encourage frequent reading sessions.

  • Parent Engagement: Invite experts to discuss school readiness and transition.

Supporting Families:

We recognize that transitioning to school can be a challenging time for families. We strive to provide reassurance and information through:

  • Regular Updates: Communicate progress and readiness tips via newsletters or meetings.

  • Information Packs: Offer resources on transitioning to school.

  • School Liaison: Connect with local schools to gather and share information about orientations and events.

Transitioning to school is a significant milestone not only for children but also for their families. Our role is to support both in navigating this new chapter, ensuring that children develop the necessary skills and confidence for a successful start to their school journey. By working closely with parents and understanding each child’s strengths and needs, we can help make this transition as smooth and positive as possible.
